Risk management — Guidelines
ISO 31000 provides internationally recognised principles and guidelines for establishing an effective and structured approach to risk management. It supports organizations in identifying, analyzing, evaluating, treating and monitoring risks, while promoting consistent communication across all levels. Applicable to organizations of any size or sector, the standard enables the integration of risk management into governance, strategy, planning and operational processes, helping to embed a risk-aware culture throughout the organization.
In an increasingly complex and uncertain environment, ISO 31000 plays a critical role in strengthening decision-making and organizational resilience. It encourages a proactive approach to risk, enabling organizations not only to mitigate potential threats but also to recognize and capitalize on opportunities. By improving the understanding of risk and promoting efficient resource allocation, the standard enhances operational performance, supports continual improvement, and reinforces stakeholder confidence and trust.
While ISO 31000 is not a certifiable standard, it serves as a robust framework and benchmark for developing and evaluating risk management practices. It provides risk managers with practical tools, structured processes and clear criteria for monitoring and improving performance. Ultimately, its adoption supports better governance, more informed decision making and a stronger alignment between risk management activities and organizational objectives.
